Journey to the heart of the glacier

Yesterday...

It was in 1992 that the two high-mountain guides, Bruno Gardent and Bernard Lambolez, passed in front of La Grotte de Glace on their way back from the Drus. Persuaded that a museum dug in the ice would be a great innovation, they convinced a local bank to lend them the funds necessary to proceed with the development of the first ice cave.

This one, nicknamed "memory of the time" by paleo-climatologists, does not stop to reveal our climatic history on a daily basis. A true natural treasure, the deeper we go into the glacier and the older the ice is.

... AND TODAY

La Grotte de Glace reveals us the secrets of the life of the mountaineers of the beginning of the 19th century and dazzled all. You can see the new ice collection carved out each year, it's various exhibitions surprise us, impress us and amaze us. Welcoming more than 400,000 visitors a year, La Grotte de Glace is undeniably one of the most famous activities to do during your stay at Montenvers.

Access

The cave is accessible either by a footpath, about 20 minutes walk, or by gondola. More than 600 steps separate the arrival of the gondola from the entrance of the cave.
